Toddler in critical condition after being struck by car

A 2-year-old Lodi boy remained hospitalized Friday night with life-threatening injuries after he was struck and thrown 70 feet by a vehicle the previous night.

The boy apparently ran in front of a westbound Dodge Viper at 7:45 p.m. Thursday after slipping out of his home in the 400 block of East Lodi Avenue, Lodi police said.

An ambulance rushed the boy to Lodi Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized and then flown by medical helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He was listed in critical condition Friday night.

The accident remains under investigation, and police do not believe alcohol was involved, said Lt. Chris Piombo.

The driver of the Viper, Lodi resident Sergio Hernandez, 33, stopped and cooperated with police, who did not initially believe he was speeding. He was not cited and investigators believe the child ran in front of Hernandez' vehicle before he had time to stop.

The child's uncle had stopped by the family's home to visit, then left and took his 7-year-old nephew with him, said Detective Nick Rafiq, who is a member of the Major Accident Investigation Team and also helped translate for the family.

When the uncle and nephew left the home, they didn't realize that the toddler had slipped out the door and followed, Rafiq said. The home is close to the road, so in mere seconds, the child had made it to the road.

Family members found out what happened when they heard a noise in the road, Rafiq said, adding there was no sign of any neglect.

" Has there been any updates as to the condition of the toddler. It's sad to see so many people are so concerned with possible negligence. It must be wonderful to be the kind of person who has never made a mistake. The concern should be "how is the baby". "

" Unless you know anything about car dynamics, force and the effects of it on a human, I'd leave the speculation of speed of the car to the professionals. You are making decisions based on little or no facts and blaming the driver, without cause. "

" How did the parents not know where their 2 yr old was? I pray the child survives and CPS is involved. "

" Some of the whackiest goofball parents I've ever met live on the WEST side of Lodi. I lived there for 5 years, and moved away from Lodi because of all the snooty weirdos in my neighborhood, which, by the way was on the WEST side of Lodi. "

" Eastside -EVERYTHING to do with it. Remember the kid killed on E. Pine St. couple years back? Responsibility dictates many things in life. The attitude of "I can't afford them but that's not my problem" is about responsibility. I dodge more kids eastside than anywhere else. "

" I think the sentiments should belong to the driver of the vehicle. How bad do you think he feels, especially when it was beyond his control to avoid this incident? It's got to be terrible for him. "

" In response to Irresponsible Parent; I don't believe that location has anything to do with the situation. I know plenty of "irresponsible" parents on the wealthier side of town. Don't judge parenting skills based off of location/social status!! "

" No 2 year old SLIPS out of a house. That is absolute negligence by our wonderful East side Parents! Thrown 70 FEET? Of course he wasn't speeding! He wasn't watching the road either. I hope the little one is going to recover, then PLEASE place the toddler with CPS. "
