Almost 200 rally in Lodi to protest proposed immigration changes
News-Sentinel Staff Writer
Close to 200 people marched from Kettleman Lane to City Hall today as thousands of others also protested immigration issues nationwide.
The Lodi protesters, nearly all Hispanic, held signs as well as U.S. and Mexican Flags. Many of those marching were teenagers or younger children and had skipped school to be part of the protest.
Lodi's small rally took place while marches and other protests were held in cities across the nation as part of a solidarity movement to oppose changes to federal immigration law.
Those on the Lodi City Hall steps today said they had turned out to oppose any laws that would make their illegal immigrant friends and family criminals.
Jennifer Hernandez, 14, said her parents are illegal immigrants who shouldn't be vilified because they're trying to improve themselves by working in the United States.
"All we came here for is a better life and money," she said.
The crowd often broke into a chant of "si sepude," or "we can do it," and protesters also chanted "Mexico." When a few of those at the rally tried to raise a cheer of "USA," they didn't get much of a response and it quickly quieted.
Marchers left the Mervyn's parking at early today, arriving at City Hall just after 9 a.m. Protesters said students organized the event with their families.
"We were text messaging, calling each other about it," said Esther Nava, 17. She said those at the rally love their adopted country and work hard to improve themselves and the nation.
Nava said immigrants shouldn't be treated as second-class people just because they do jobs that many people won't.
"We want to make sure everybody is treated equally," she said.

As people nearby waved Mexican flags, Nava said people who criticize the protesters because they wave Mexican flags don't understand their message.
"I think that's really mean," she said, adding it's immigrants who do the hard work to help the country.
The protest was peaceful, and there were no reports of traffic disturbances, Lodi Police Lt. Bill Barry said. Officers told the protesters to stay on sidewalks and avoid obstructing traffic, and they seemed to be complying, Barry said.
Ana Gutierrez, 18, said she would like to see the federal government grant illegal immigrants the right to work in the country.
"It's not fair the United States wants them to be criminals," she said.
Laura Rodriquez attended the rally with her family and said some of the new, stringent proposals for immigration law reform is almost hypocritical.
"How can a nation of immigrants be against immigration?" she asked.
