Dozens of Lodi High students protest immigration bill

As many as 50 Hispanic students walked off the Lodi High campus Tuesday morning in protest of recent legislation proposals that could make illegal residence in the U.S. a felony.

Half that number took their cause to the streets of Lodi, as they paraded down the city's main streets. Some Tokay High students joined the ranks as they walked.

Their protest signs were notebook paper with marker-scrawled messages in Spanish. Their chant, "Mexicans united, we'll never be separated," rang down Church Street as the group made its way to the Lodi Library.

Their message was simple: "Immigrants are not criminals," said Diana Miranda,16.

It's a message being echoed throughout the nation by thousands to lawmakers in Washington D.C. who are talking about border enforcement and heavy fines for those who give aid to illegal immigrants.

But Tuesday morning, most Lodi residents who saw the picketing high school students had a message of their own.

"People are flipping us off," said 14-year-old Sonia Ramirez.

"There was an old guy going to McDonald's that said 'Go back to Mexico,' " added her 16-year-old friend, Laura Maldonado.

Someone at Church and Walnut streets called the police to complain about the protest.

Protests in Lodi may still be small, but students say their parents plan to join them in upcoming demonstrations being held in the Stockton area.
