City manager: Meeting in New York productive
Lodi City Manager Blair King said his recent trip to New York City to meet with representatives of the nation's leading credit agencies went well.
King, along with City Councilmen Larry Hansen and Bob Johnson, Lodi Electric Utility Director George Morrow and Deputy City Manager Jim Krueger met with Standard and Poor's and Fitch's rating agencies.
The trip came in response to the agencies giving a "negative outlook" to the electric utility.
During Wednesday's council meeting, King said the city officials weren't traveling to lobby the agencies to change the outlook but rather bring them up to date with what the city is doing to improve the utility's finances. He said it may take about a year for the utility's outlook to improve and even longer for its credit rating to increase.
King said the agencies expressed confidence in Lodi's plans to improve the utility's financial position.
Those plans include a risk oversight committee to review power purchases, participating in power generation projects and reducing the utility's "open" position on the energy market.
Former deputy running for Sacramento Sheriff
Former deputy and Citrus Heights Mayor Bret Daniels is running for Sacramento County Sheriff for the third time.
Daniels, 45, filed for the June primary election on Wednesday. The filing period for sheriff was extended an extra five days until Wednesday because Sheriff Lou Blanas is not seeking re-election. Daniels lost to Blanas in the 2002 and 1998 elections.
Daniels will oppose Undersheriff John McGuiness for the sheriff's position.
A sheriff's deputy as well, Daniels was fired in 2000 for allegedly lying to Internal Affairs officers about an off-duty trip to Arizona. He had been a Citrus Heights City Council member since the city incorporated in 1997.
Daniels resigned as mayor in November so that he could be considered for employment with the newly created Citrus Heights Police Department.
