Father, son face more charges in terror case

A Lodi father and son charged in a terrorism case are each facing an additional charge of lying to federal agents.

The charges against Umer Hayat, 47, and his 23-year-old son, Hamid Hayat, add no new allegations, and a U.S. Attorney's Office spokesperson said Thursday's indictment was a way of cleaning up the case in preparation for trial.

Umer Hayat now faces two counts of lying to the FBI — one count relating his alleged knowledge of terrorist training camps in Pakistan and another count regarding whether he knew his son attended a camp.

Hamid Hayat faces one count of providing material support to terrorists and three counts of lying to the FBI at three different times about his alleged attendance at the camps.

Both men, who were arrested in early June, remain without bail in the Sacramento County jail and are scheduled to stand trial Feb. 14.

Suspect arraigned on murder charge

A Galt man charged with murder in the shooting death of a Thornton father of four was arraigned Monday on charges that could carry the death penalty.

Chaz Lee Harrison, 25, was appointed a public defender and did not enter a plea during his brief court appearance, San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Chuck Schultz said. Harrison will return to court today, when his co-defendant is scheduled to make his first appearance.

Richard Anthony Chism, 29, of Lodi, also faces murder charges that could carry the death penalty.

Sheriff's deputies have identified Chism as the driver and Harrison as the shooter in the fatal Dec. 26 slaying of Jose Contreras, 39. The Thornton man had gone to a local store, stopped outside to talk to friends and was shot when a vehicle passed, according to witnesses.

After evading authorities for nearly a month, Harrison was arrested Jan. 23 in Southern California following a dispute. Chism was arrested Sunday morning when the Sheriff's SWAT team converged on an Acampo home where he had apparently been staying.

Both men are charged with murder and shooting at an occupied dwelling, and face special circumstances allegations of participating in a drive-by shooting. They are being held without bail in the county jail.

Public meeting on water-sewer rate increase

Galt Public Works staff will discuss its plan to increase sewer rates by almost $11 per month at a public meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Anthony Pescetti Community Room at the Galt police station, 455 Industrial Drive.

The City Council will consider the rate increase on Feb. 21 to help comply with state regulations for sewage disposal. The city's 73-cent monthly water increase will also be discussed at tonight's meeting.

More information is available by calling 366-7260 and on the city's Web site, http://www.ci.galt.ca.us/site/Rate.pdf.

Man may have sprayed neighbor with diesel fuel

An Acampo man was arrested Sunday night on suspicion of spraying his neighbor with diesel fuel and water during an ongoing dispute over property lines.

Kevin Uffelman, 39, was spraying his fence line in the 12000 block of East Jahant Road with a mixture of diesel fuel and water at 5:25 p.m., according to San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies. His next-door neighbor, who has been involved in property issues with Uffelman, approached and asked him to stop spraying because he was worried about his animals.

The two began yelling at one another, and Uffelman then allegedly pushed the nozzle through the fence and sprayed his neighbor's lower pant legs. When the neighbor kicked the nozzle, Uffelman then sprayed the man's whole body and face, deputies said.

The victim's wife called 9-1-1 while he ran to a neighbor's house to flush his face with water. Medical crews arrived, gave him oxygen, helped flush his face with water and then transported the man to the hospital, according to deputies.

Uffelman was booked into the county jail on suspicion of assault with caustic chemicals, and by Monday he was no longer in custody.

" What difference does it make if it's in our "home town" or if it's in another area? Terrorism is terrorism and we've got to take a stand against it and not only worry when it happens at home. "

" Sharia Law is alive and well in some communities in Michigan. This Islamic system of government is not compatible with our system of government and is a threat to the sanctity of this country. Radical Islam's goal is to conquer the world. Lodi would not be immune. "
