Ghouls, goblins to parade downtown

The brick-lined streets of downtown Lodi will fill with dogs, cats and children Saturday for the Pet Parade and Safe Halloween trick-or-treating and costume contest. It's one of four holiday events taking place through Monday.

• Starting at 1 p.m. at the corner of Oak and School streets, poodles, Labradors, mastiffs, basset hounds and cats — all in Halloween finery — and their owners will loop through downtown for the third-annual Pet Parade and return to Oak and School for costume judging.

• An hour later, at 2 p.m., children will take to the streets to solicit candy from roughly 35 downtown merchants who are participating in the Downtown Lodi Business Partnership's Safe Halloween. From Lodi Avenue north to Locust Street and Sacramento Street west to Church Street, participating merchants will have orange flyers in their windows.

Additionally, children will have the opportunity to paint pumpkins, which they can take home. The day concludes with a costume contest at 3 p.m. at Oak and School streets.

Last year's first prize in the Pet Parade went to a feline decked out in a lace skirt and beaded necklaces. The first-prize winner this year will receive a $50 gift certificate to pet accessory shop Kingdom of Four Paws; the second-prize winner gets a $35 certificate to the shop and the third-prize winner gets a $25 certificate. Each participant will receive a gift bag with treats for cats and dogs.

Registration for the Pet Parade is $10 and proceeds will benefit Animal Friends Network, which provides therapy dogs to hospitals. Parade organizers ask that last-minute registrants show up at least 15 minutes prior to the parade.

• On Sunday, costumes will be donned by dozens of pugs and pug mixes to compete for prizes for their owners during Sunday's Pug-O-Ween event.

Sponsored by the nonprofit organization, PugSavers, the event will include contests for best costume, curliest tale and best kisser. There will also be a painting booth and a psychic.

Pug-O-Ween will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sycamore Lane Farm on Ray Road, north of Highway 12.

Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children under 12, and $3 for pugs and pug mixes. Dogs must be under 35 pounds. Lunch is available for an additional $6, and water will be available for the dogs.

• And if you're still in the Halloween mood, on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m., visitors can get spooked at Harvest Faire 2005 and a (Not So) Haunted Hutchins at Hutchins Street Square.
