Two stabbings over holiday weekend
Two people were stabbed, but not seriously injured, during separate incidents over the weekend.
At Blakely Park off Stockton and Poplar streets, a 21-year-old man was punched, kicked and stabbed in the back after being attacked by several men dressed in red, Lodi police said.
The incident took place at 7:10 p.m. Sunday when Daniel Bravo, 21, and Antonio Hernandez, 39, both from Lodi, left a restroom in the park, Lodi police Lt. J.P. Badel said.
The men reportedly asked Bravo and Hernandez if they were gang members. Both said no, but the men in red assaulted them, Badel said. Hernandez was given stitches at Lodi Memorial Hospital after being cut in the forehead by a broken beer bottle, police said. Bravo was treated and released at Lodi Memorial for his stab wound, Badel said.
There have been no arrests.
In an incident a few hours later, Drake Betinger, 31, a parolee from Lodi, received minor stab wounds in the upper chest after reportedly being stabbed at 1:55 a.m. Monday at Stooges, 105 W. Pine St., Badel said.
Betinger ran from Lodi Memorial after he learned that hospital personnel notified police that a stabbing took place, Badel said. Officers found Betinger at his residence and took him back to the hospital, police said. He was not arrested.
Seven arrested during DUI checkpoint
The Lodi Police Department arrested seven people on suspicion of drunken driving during a sobriety checkpoint at two locations over a period of more than six hours.
Officers stopped 1,414 drivers between 7:45 p.m. Saturday and 2:15 a.m. Sunday. The checkpoint was in the 300 block of East Lodi Avenue and moved to the 1100 block of West Kettleman Lane.
The seven drivers arrested were booked in Lodi jail, their cars were towed and they were served with a notice that their license would be suspended, according to Sgt. Steve Carillo.
The sobriety checkpoint was the third of three checkpoints funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety's "You drink, you drive, you lose" campaign.
