Fly fishing outing

The Delta Fly Fishers will go on their annual New Year's Day outing on the Mokelumne River at Van Assen Park off Highway 12 on McIntire Road below the fish hatchery.

• Eagle Lake in Lassen County is hosting a trophy trout fishing competition on Dec. 31. For more information call (530) 825-2191.

• Three Central Valley rivers reopen on Jan. 1 for trout, salmon and steelhead fishing. One is the Mokelumne River east of Peltier Bridge, the Stanislaus River east of Highway 99 and the American River east of the powerlines at Ancil Hoffman Park. For more information call (209) 957-4867.

Sportsman Exposition

Cal Expo is hosting an International Sportsmen's Exposition beginning Jan. 20.

• The Safari Club International's 33rd gathering of worldwide hunters is Jan. 26-29. The event will be held at the Reno Sparks Convention Center. For more information call (888) 746-9724.

• The San Mateo County Fairgrounds is hosting an International Sportsmen's Exposition and Fly Fishing shows Feb. 3-6.

• The Alameda County Fairgrounds is hosting an International Sportsmen's Exposition from Feb. 25-27.

Fishing program

Delta Fly Fishers has introduced a new program for its members called the Fishing Buddy Program. Objectives of the program are to encourage others to participate in fly fishing and unite members who possess certain fly fishing skills with those members wishing to learn, thus making their fishing experience more productive and pleasurable.

Fishing Buddies will be available to any member of Delta Fly Fishers and offer their expertise in the areas of the art of fly fishing, fly tying, rod building, float tubing, pontoon boating, equipment purchasing, stream and lake fishing, and attending outings.
