Grant races to 2nd place in the 300 hurdles, earns trip to state meet

Lodi High senior hurdler Katelin Grant missed going to last year's state meet by the smallest of margins.

She vowed not to do the same this season.

And on Friday afternoon at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento, Grant was able to put the past behind her.

Grant finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.51 seconds in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I track and field finals and will advance to the state meet next Friday and Saturday at Hughes Stadium.

"I'm pretty stoked to be going to state," Grant said. "This year made up for last year."

Grant decided to scratch in the 100 hurdles in order to save her energy for the 300 because there was no rest between days for the trials and finals.

"The race was really close and there were four girls together down the stretch," Grant said. "Quite honestly, I wasn't expecting to do so well. I was worried after yesterday when I finished in fifth place because I felt like my time was faster than it actually was."

The top three in each event advance along with anyone who meets the automatic qualifying time.

Grant's time in the finals was well below the 45.19 she ran in Thursday's preliminaries and came three weeks after she hit hurdles in both of her events at the Meet of Champions at the same track.

"We went over the race on video last night and we fixed some of her intervals," Lodi hurdles coach Todd Oesterman said. "She was way too fast in between hurdle one and two on Thursday, so we fixed that."

Grant had planned on missing graduation ceremonies Friday night, but was able to join her classmates at the Grape Bowl at the last minute along with teammate Matt Kiesz.

"Right before the race we talked about sacrifice and everything she gave up so she could run a good race," Oesterman said. "She's put in a lot of hours and achieved her goal."

Serena Hubbard, who was Tokay's lone finalist, just missed qualifying for the state meet in the discus.

Her toss of 39-feet came up six inches short, but was good enough for fourth place and a medal.

Hubbard's mark also broke the prior school record of 38-feet which she held.

"It's really heartbreaking for her to miss by that little," Tokay coach Jeff Johnston said. "But she was pretty happy and it was everything she had hoped for."

Kiesz ran a 1:57.80 in the 800 meters and finished sixth, which wasn't good enough to send him to state, but earned him a medal.

"Matt was happy with his finish," Lodi distance coach Jeff Tillett said. "He's not heartbroken he doesn't get to go to state."

After qualifying fifth, Lodi's 4x400 relay team was disqualified during the finals for a false start.

"The starter was holding the kids back for a really long time," Lodi head coach Greg Wright said.

Julia Tyack failed to qualify in the 1600 meters (5:26), although she did set a personal record. Fran Stonum also missed the cut in the 3200 with a time of 11:47.

Stonum also qualified for Friday's finals in the 1600, but decided to scratch that event to concentrate on the 3200.
