The Bear Creek Bruins collected 12 hits and drew 13 walks in cruising to a 13-7 win Tuesday over the Lodi Flames in varsity baseball at Zupo Field.

The Bruins (7-7) move into third-place tie with Lodi (9-7) and West in the San Joaquin Athletic Association, all with 5-3 league marks.

"We didn't get pitching tonight," Rostomily said. "We need somebody to step up on the mound for us."

Pitcher Nick Lott, who was slated to start on the mound against Bear Creek at Zupo Field on Tuesday, was lost for the season after undergoing an appendectomy.

Rostomily cited the inability to keep Bear Creek from answering Lodi comebacks and too many walks as his team's downfall.

"We hit the ball well enough to win," Rostomily said. "You have to hand it to Bear Creek, they hit the ball well, but we gave up far too many walks."

After three straight singles with one out in the top of the first inning resulted in a 1-0 Bruins' lead, starter Matt Recker walked the bases loaded before ending the threat with a strikeout and ground out.

The Flames took the lead when Brian McMillen smacked a two-run homer, scoring Mike Fernandes, who had doubled.

Recker and Bear Creek starter Chris Jennings both pitched a scoreless second inning before Bear Creek exploded for the first of two five-run innings.

Lodi answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with the aid of two Bruin errors.

Jeff Pepper reached on an error with one out before Andy Zimmerman singled.

Shannon Ferrill then hit a slow roller to short and when he slid into first base the ball got away, allowing Pepper and Zimmerman to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Once again the Bruins returned the favor with two runs in the sixth and the Flames put two on the board in the bottom of the inning for an 8-6 deficit after five.

But McMillen, who became the third Lodi pitcher when he replaced Garrett Brown to start the sixth, gave up four walks, including one with the bases loaded, and the Bruins scored five runs to put the game out of reach.

Pepper, who scored twice and had two RBIs, then hit a solo-homer over the left-field fence for the final run of the game.

The Flames host Tracy at 6 p.m. today at Zupo Field before the two teams square off again Friday.

"Hopefully we come back ready to play," Rostomily said.
