Season memberships are on sale for the 2002-03 Lodi Community Concert season.
The season begins Oct. 21 with Alborada, a five-member musical
group that entertains using more than 30 different instruments in a
unique blend of Andean music, classical arrangements and popular
tunes. The group will also give a concert for children in the
afternoon.
Next is Frank Vignola & Hot Club USA. Formed in 1997, the
Hot Club has toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe. Their
performance celebrates the acoustic chamber jazz sound created in
Paris in the 1930s by Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his
partner, violinist Stephane Grappelli.
Following the Hot Club is a free bonus concert Jan. 18. A "pops"
concert featuring the Valley Concert Band conducted by Roland Terry
will feature guest artist fiddler Billy Armstrong. He has been
awarded the title of Country Music's No. 1 Fiddle Player 13
consecutive years by the Academy of Country Music.
Armstrong has performed with Hank Thompson, Tex Williams, Spade
Cooley, Cliff Stone and The Frontiersmen, and was a member of the
Sons of the Pioneers for eight years. Armstrong recorded with Bob
Wills as well as with many other country stars during his
career.
Soprano Alison England appears in "Opera, Broadway &
Beyond," on March 11. Her performance blends opera, Broadway and
pop's best, with reflections of one artist's journey through life.
England has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the
Seattle, Miami, St. Louis and Honolulu symphonies.
Glen Rose and Tin Pan Alley will present a tribute to American
songwriters of the 1920s and 1930s on April 22. Rose toured for 10
years entertaining in every country in western Europe. Not only an
accomplished vocalist and pianist, he also tap dances and plays the
ukulele and guitar.
His programs are spiced with anecdotes, as well as the living
history of each artist and his times.
Prices for the four-series concerts are $50 adults, $15
students, and $110 for the family plan (two adults plus students
age 18 and under).
