Tokay Tigers softball pitcher Hilary Hirzel had 10 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over Galt in the Tokay Tournament on Friday night at the Lodi Softball Complex.
Hirzel went the distance in the five-inning game, only allowing two hits while walking one.
She is definitely one of the best pitchers in the area, Tokay coach Rick Vollstedt said.
Galt got on the scoreboard early, with Amanda Wise stealing home, giving the Warriors their lone run in the first inning.
Tokay threatened in the bottom half of the inning, with Terra Fraser leading off with a single. But a strikeout and a double play by the Warriors ended the threat.
Hirzel put the Warriors down in order in the second, but Galt pitcher Staci Patterson responded, holding the Tigers scoreless for a second straight inning.
Hirzel continued to dominate, picking up two more strikeouts in the third.
Wise did manage to reach third base in the inning, but was sent back to the dugout after a pop fly put the Warriors away.
Tokays bats finally came alive in the third. A single by Rachel Gordon loaded the bases. Misty Brown followed with the game-winning two-run single that plated Terra Fraser and Gordon and put the Tigers ahead 2-1.
Galt went down fast in the fourth, with Hirzel collecting two more strikeouts.
Hirzel added two more strikeouts at the beginning of the fifth, bringing her total to 10.
She averages about two strikeouts an inning, Vollstedt said.
Wise finished with three stolen bases and one run for the Warriors.
We rely on her pretty heavily, Galt coach Don Bettencourt said. We just needed to hit a little more.
Tokay improved to 2-0-1 on the season while the Warriors fell to 2-5-1.
Both teams will be back in action today, the final day of the tournament.
The Tigers begin San Joaquin Athletic Association play Tuesday when they host Franklin at 3:30 p.m.
Galt opens Sierra Valley Conference play Monday when the Warriors play at Cordova at 3:30 p.m.
