Accomplishment: With his team in a must-win situation to stay in the postseason hunt, Lodi American Legion pitcher Andrew Troncale was nearly unhittable in a 9-1 victory over Ed Stewart on Saturday at Stagg High School.

Troncale, who will be a senior at Tokay High this fall, tossed a complete-game three-hitter with five strikeouts and shut down the Ed Stewart offense until Lodi erupted for seven runs in the ninth inning to put the game away.

Andrew Troncale

Family: Tony Troncale and Kathi Burke, parents; one brother.

Favorite sport: Baseball. Troncale says he's been playing since he was 7 years old.

"I get the most joy out of it," he said.

Favorite athlete: San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds.

"I'm impressed with all the work he puts into being the best he can," said Troncale, who believes Bonds (644 HRs) will pass Hank Aaron (755 HRs) as baseball's all-time home run leader if he stays healthy.

Favorite hobby: Hanging out with friends. Troncale said there's not much else to do in Lodi.

Favorite class: History, because Mr. Kaiser made it interesting, Troncale said.

Crowning achievement: Putting the Lodi American Legion team in position to make the Area Playoffs with his dominating pitching performance in last Saturday's victory over Ed Stewart.

Would like to meet: New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens. "With what he's achieved over the years, I don't know if another pitcher will dominate like him," Troncale said of the 300-game winner and future Hall of Famer.

Plans: Troncale would like to play baseball at a Division I school.

The Athlete of the week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Troncale will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
