Tokay High's varsity wrestling team repeated as league champs, winning the San Joaquin Athletic Association league meet Saturday in convincing fashion.

The Tigers qualified eight wrestlers into the finals, and four won individual titles.

Tokay finished with 228 team points to Bear Creek High's 188.

Lodi High parlayed a third place finish at the league meet (183 points) into a second-place finish overall for the season.

Winning titles for Tokay were Chuck Booz at 125 pounds, Patrick GoForth at 145 pounds, James Allen at 160 pounds, and Nate Malm at 215 pounds.

Allen was named the tourney's most valuable wrestler, after capturing his third straight league title.

"It was a good showing for our guys, since we went into the tournament pretty beat up," Lodi coach Steve Jordan said. "We didn't have a varsity starter at four weight classes."

Hugo Sanchez, the Flames' 215-pounder, blew out his knee in practice earlier in the week. Amin Mozeb's shoulder injury finally got the better of him and Lodi ended up having to forfeit his 130-pound weight class at the tourney.

Josh Silva battled the flu and was not able to wrestle at 112 pounds. Injuries and illness also took their toll at 189 pounds, where "we were down to our fourth string," Jordan said.

Still, Lodi managed to place six wrestlers in the finals, where the Flames boasted one champion and five second place finishes.

Felipe Bramasco won the 103-pound weight class for Lodi, going 3-0.

Finishing second for Tokay were Rodney Gaines (112 pounds), Andrew Stipe (130 pounds), Robert Charlton (189 pounds) and Brian Deemer (heavyweight),

Placing second for the Flames were Troy Jarrett (119 pounds, 2-1 record), Dan Snyder (140, 2-1), John Coughran (145, 2-1) Aaron Crumpacker (152, 2-1) and Kevin Culbertson (171, 2-1).

Finishing third for Lodi were Sergio Sixto (112, 3-1), Sean Marzolf (125, 3-1), Justin Valdez (135, 3-1) and Robert Mayfield (160, 3-1).

Tokay's Zubin Dah finished third at 140 pounds and Alex Malm placed fourth at 171 pounds. The Tigers' Charlie Tyler was fifth at 152 pounds.

Lodi's Robert Bryant placed fifth at 189 pounds with a 3-2 mark while Chayne Solis was sixth in the heavyweight division with a 2-3 record.

The final league standings are determined by adding one point for each dual meet win and one point for each place in the tournament standings, Jordan said.

"There are 16 points possible and we finished with 13," Jordan said. "Tokay got 16 and Bear Creek got 13. We get the nod for second because we beat Bear Creek head to head in our dual meet."

Tokay also won the junior varsity level, earning 259 points at the league meet, while Lodi also placed second, garnering 215 points.

Keying the jayvee Flames with first-place finishes were Matt Halecky (119 pounds, 3-0 record), Ben Smith (140, 3-0), Jeff Kuhn (145, 3-0) and Eric Olson (152, 3-0).

Placing second were Tim Snyder (103, 2-1) and Jimmy Beasley (135, 2-1).

Finishing third were Mark Splain (160, 3-1), Tim Bender (171, 3-1) and Chris Kotsolgou (215, 3-1). Greg Williams (189, 202) and Adam Handel (heavyweight, 2-2) finished fourth, while Mike Sanden (125, 2-2) was fifth.
