Although Lodi High's boys golf team failed to advance to the Northern California Championships on Monday, the Flames still have a flicker of hope.

Casey Porter fired a 1-under-par 70 to place second among individuals at the Sac-Joaquin Section Tournament at Castle Oaks Golf Course in Ione.

The top three teams and the top four individuals move on to NorCals, which will be held next Monday at Mira Vista Golf and Country Club in El Cerrito.

Porter finished second to Vacaville's Elliott Paylor (68). Turlock's Jesse Contreras (71) was third.

1. Oak Ridge 375
2. Granite Bay 377*
Jesuit 377*
St. Mary's 377
5. McClatchy 386
6. Lodi 387

* Top three teams advance to NorCals. Granite Bay and Jesuit defeated St. Mary's in a playoff.

St. Mary's Brian Ward, of Lodi, and Del Oro's Ben Harrison both shot 72s and will square off in a playoff today for the final qualifying spot.

Oak Ridge took the team title with a combined score of 375, two shots better than St. Mary's, Granite Bay and Jesuit.

The three second-place teams went into a playoff to determine the final two NorCal berths, with Granite Bay and Jesuit coming away victorious after the first hole.

McClatchy was fifth with a 386, one shot better than Lodi. West shot 395.

The Flames were looking to advance to NorCals for the first time since 1994, when they placed fourth.

Lodi won the NorCal title in 1993.

Despite Monday's outcome, Lodi coach Steve Wolf said his squad had a great year.

"We played solid all year long," said Wolf, whose team won its sixth straight league title and added a subsection championship. "One bad day doesn't make a season. A round of 387 isn't bad.

"It's been a long season and a lot of fun. I'm already looking forward to next year. We have nearly every starter returning."

Adam Beckman shot a 75 for Lodi, A.J. Hohn posted an 80, Ross Vilinskas and Jake Handel each shot 81s and Chris Karger carded an 82 (Karger's score didn't count).

Tokay's Charlie Van Sicklen, who participated in individual play, shot an 85.

Steve Meyers hit a 74 for St. Mary's, Pat Weathers carded a 76, Joey Ferrari had a 77 and Chad Moscovic fired a 78.

Brandon Kruger led West with a 75.
