Tokay's McDaniel to play basketball at Seattle University
Tokay High School basketball star Jeff McDaniel has signed a scholarship to play for Seattle University.
The Redhawks, a Division II school in the Great Northwest Atlantic Conference, are directed by first-year coach Joe Callero. The Redhawks will have seven players returning, including three starters.
"I'm very excited about playing basketball," McDaniel said. "Coach told me that I'll be playing the shooting guard and small forward spots."
McDaniel, who has 3-point range, said the area he will work hardest on between now and the start of the collegiate basketball season is his mid-range game.
Luna leads Hofstra to championship
Hofstra University junior Jessica Luna recently led the softball team to the 2002 Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
The Pride (11-2 CAA) also captured the postseason tournament championship with a 9-1 victory over Townson to cap off a 14-0 record to end the season.
Luna drove in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning in the opener of the tourney.
With a 3-2 count, she fouled off a series of pitches before finally coaxing the walk, bringing Hofstra back from a 4-2 deficit to a 5-4 victory.
Despite ending the season with a .173 average, Luna added nine RBIs.
It is the third straight title for Luna and the Pride. The first two championships were in the America East Conference.
Unfortunately, with the CAA in its first year, Luna missed a chance for a third straight trip to the NCAAs.
Thurman named all-league
University of the Pacific junior Brandy Thurman, a former Tokay High School standout, made the Big West All-Conference second team in softball at third base.
Lodi's Brian Ward, a student at St. Mary's High, recently won the Sierra Nevada Junior Classic in Genoa, Nev.
Ward finished with a two-day total of 147 to place first in the boys 16-19 division.
