It’s been a week since the backhoes started digging around at Lodi Lake, and they’ve already knocked down the retaining wall on Turner Road.

The construction work, which began Nov. 27, will include moving the sidewalk farther from the road for safety issues.

The beach will be expanded and new bulkheads installed. A new lawn will also be put in.

The project is scheduled to be finished in early spring just in time for Memorial Day, said Jack Harrison, interim Parks and Recreation director. The holiday weekend is typically the lake’s busiest as it kicks off the swimming season.

“Plans are moving well,” Harrison said Tuesday.

The construction is not anticipated to affect Saturday’s annual Christmas Tree Run whose route takes participants across the beach.

The $775,000 project was approved by the City Council Nov. 15.

It is the first phase of a multi-phase project. Future plans include extending the path east, making improvements to the Turner Road parking lot and constructing a bus shelter, said Public Works Director Richard Prima.
