$100 bills found at waste plant

Lodi police officers were called to Central Valley Waste, 1333 E. Turner Road, Monday after receiving a report that money was found at the waste plant.

An employee told police that a large number of $100 bills were coming across a conveyor belt. Officers took the money into evidence, Police Sgt. Doug Chinn said.

Officers believe they were able to retrieve most of the money, police said.

Numbers on the bills will be traced in an attempt to locate the owner, Chinn said.

LUSD to discuss school naming committee

Lodi Unified School District trustees will review applications for the school naming committee and determine how the committee will be selected at a special meeting Wednesday.

The committee will be charged with recommending names for a handful of new schools which will be constructed in the district.

Trustees named Ralph Wetmore, a 78-year-old Lodi resident, as the committee's interim chairman in August.

Committee members are expected to be appointed later this month.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at the district office, 1305 E. Vine St. in Lodi.

Workers to clean radioactive water at Rancho Seco

Workers at the closed Rancho Seco Nuclear Plant about 12 miles northeast of Galt will start cleaning radioactive water that was used to cool and shield spent fuel.

The water will be filtered and diluted so it can spilled offsite into a network of creeks that feed the Cosumnes River.

Clean-up efforts were set to begin Monday.

Emptying Rancho Seco's spent-fuel pool will cost $2.7 million. It is part of a plan to dismantle the nuclear plant, which was shut down by a popular vote in 1989.

The water will flow into Clay Creek carrying tiny amounts of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, said Michael Bua, radiation protection chemistry superintendent for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. It's difficult to remove tritium because hydrogen is a basic building block of water, but low levels of it have been deemed safe.
