Modesto captures Tamayo tourney

Modesto Slam-N-Jam won the eighth-grade boys division with a 65-61 win over the Bay Area Blue Devils last weekend in the Rod Tamayo Middle School Basketball Tournament.

Chris Avey led Modesto with 17 points.

The third-place game was an all-Lodi affair as the Lodi Comets defeated St. Anne’s 56-44. The Comets led all the way behind Michael Sasaki’s 13 points and Alex River’s 12 points.

Andy Solario led St. Anne’s with 14 points.

Lodi defeated Kerr Junior High of Elk Grove 41-16 in the first round.

Steven Salisbury scored 13 points and Jordan Lawley added 12 points.

Lodi lost in the second round 76-39 to Modesto Slam-N-Jam behind 11 points from Salisbury.

In the seventh-grade division, the Lodi Comets finished third with a 2-2 record in the round-robin tournament.

The Comets defeated Tehama of Red Bluff in the first game, 42-41.

Peter Murdaca scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Lodi outscored Tehama 14-9 to come from behind for the win.

The Comets won their second-round game 57-12 over Mid Cal of Stockton before beating Turlock 40-25 in the third game.

Nathaniel Napier scored 10 and Jeff McCarty and Murdaca each added eight.

In the final game the Stockton Rams beat the Comets 46-34 to claim the championship despite 13 points from Murdaca.

The Lodi Pavers won the inaugural Tamayo girls division with a 35-25 win over River View of Rio Vista in the championship.

Sarah Armstrong netted 14 points. The Pavers reached the finals after a 53-28 win over Woodland, and a 37-28 victory over Tehema, with Armstong scoring 17 and 11 points.

The Lodi Cardinals finished seventh with a 1-2 record.

Lodi lost to River View 33-26 as Hallsie Pacheco led the Cardinals with seven points. Pacheco added 11 in a 39-37 loss to Galt. Krissy Synowicki scored seven and Faryn Schatz added five as the Cardinals beat Churchill of Carmichael 28-21 in the final game.
