After struggling at times in the preseason, Tokay High’s varsity wrestling team seems poised to make another run at a San Joaquin Athletic Association title.

The Tigers, who have claimed every SJAA title except for two since 1990, hammered host Edison 48-18 Thursday to improve to 2-0 in league matches.

Tokay’s Adam Yee, wrestling in the 140-pound weight division, pinned Edison’s Jesus Vega in the first period to give the Tigers a 10-3 lead. Tokay, which never trailed in the match, also got first-round pins by Nate Malm (215), Bryan Deemer (heavyweight) and Rodney Gaines (119).

Andrew Stipe (130), Patrick Goforth (152), Scott Gaines (160), Nick Erracalde (112) and Samuel Sanchez (125) each won by decision for the Tigers. Nick Mease won by forfeit.

Tokay’s junior varsity defeated Edison 78-6.

Lodi, which finished second in the SJAA last season, also improved to 2-0, knocking off visiting Lincoln 50-20.

“We’re a real young team, so this was a good match for us tonight,” Lodi coach Steve Jordan said. “We didn’t have any wrestlers get pinned in the first period.”

Jimmy Beasley (135) recorded a first-round pin for the Flames. Other Lodi wrestlers with pins included Judd Tyler (103), Justin Valdez (140), Aaron Crumpacker (152) and Adam Handel (heavyweight).

Matt Halecky (125), Ben Smith (160) and Eric Olson (171) won by decision for the Flames. Felipe Bramasco (112) and Ben St. Clair (130) won by forfeit.

The Flames’ junior varsity squad whipped the Trojans 78-6.

Lodi travels to Edison next Thursday while Tokay will participate in the Hatler Tournament this weekend in Sonora before hosting Bear Creek next Thursday.
