The Lodi Flames varsity boys water polo team cruised to a 10-2 win Friday over Nevada Union in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Division I Section playoffs at Modesto's Johansen High School.

The win sets up a rematch with the Davis Blue Devils in the second round of the playoffs at Solano Community College in Fairfield at 9 a.m. Monday.

The Blue Devils eliminated the Flames from the postseason last year with a dominating 17-4 win.

The Flames led 4-0 at the half against Nevada Union.

"I think we struggled a little early because the guys were looking ahead to Davis," Lodi coach Robert Elrod said. "We didn't click against Nevada Union but we have a day of practice on Saturday and we'll review the film on Sunday to get ready for Davis."

Kyle Hensel netted a hat trick to lead Lodi (23-10).

Eric Weisz, Darrell Schulz and Jen Young all scored twice and Ryan Hust added one goal. Goalie Mike Alberg recorded 12 saves.

The Flames' defense will be challenged by three talented Blue Devil offensive players, Elrod said.

"They're an ultra-physical team and they swim very well," he said. "We'll have to key on their top three and make sure the role players don't beat us. The guys are excited."

If Tokay beats Johansen and the Flames exact revenge on Davis during Monday's second round, then an all-Lodi quarterfinal would be held Wednesday at Solano College.
