In what promises to be one of the most highly watched elections in recent years, five of the seven seats on the Lodi Unified School District board of education are open in November.
Trustee Calvin Young said he planned to file candidacy papers on Monday, the first day of the filing period, but got busy. He will do so today.
Incumbent Richard Jones announced last week he will seek re-election for area 3, while Jeff Thompson said on Sunday that he has decided not to run.
Board hopeful Ron Heberle has already said he hopes to be elected to Thompson’s seat and represent Area 5.
The other open four-year seat is Area 1, currently held by trustee Bonnie Cassel. She could not be reached Monday afternoon.
The fifth seat was held by Harvey Bills Sr., who resigned last spring. The person elected to represent Area 6 will finish Bills’ two-year term, which expires in 2012.
Other possible candidates include George Neely for Area 3 and David Schindler, who would represent Area 1. It was not clear whether either officially filed papers on Monday, but, like Heberle, both have made clear their intentions to run in November.
