Every year, Lodi High School gives the Breakthrough Award to a graduating senior who best exemplifies the goals of the Breakthrough Project: To create a community that is free of bigotry, racism, prejudice and intolerance by celebrating our diversity through communication, education and responding to acts of intolerance.

The recipient is chosen by the principal of Lodi High School, in consultation with that year’s senior class counselor, vice principal and student body president.

The award is a cash grant, no strings attached, and is funded solely by cash contributions from the people of Lodi.

Last year Debbi Goni, Taj Khan and others in Lodi graciously donated $1,300. A perpetual plaque at Lodi High School forever honors the recipients.

If you want a community that is free of bigotry, racism, prejudice and intolerance, I urge you to send a check to the principal of Lodi High School for $1, $5, $10, or whatever you can afford, marked as “a donation for the Breakthrough Award.”

If you want to celebrate Lodi’s diversity through love and understanding, and if you want to respond to acts of intolerance, get your hammer out of the tool box, smash that piggy bank and take all that loose change to: Principal Kelly Mauch, Lodi High School, 3 S. Pacific Ave., Lodi, CA 95240.

Tell her it’s for the Breakthrough Award.

Tell her it’s for the future of Lodi.

Randall W. Rosa Lodi
