We have a mess in Afghanistan. The government rules only in Kabul; the rest of the country is in the charge of warlords. The Taliban, those guys who gave us Osama, are back and on the attack.
We have chaos in Iraq. So many of our soldiers are being killed and maimed and we will be occupying that hostile country for years at a cost to us of hundreds of billions of dollars.
We have a president who continues to claim the right to make war on any country he decides is a threat. The Bush team tells us the objective is not just Iraq, but the political transformation of the whole Middle East, a crusade to convey every country there to a democracy, whether by persuasion or by force.
Next door to Iraq is Iran. Iran is a known supporter of the Hamas terror group in Palestine. Iran has been warned that it must disclose the nature and extent of its nuclear program by October 31, an ultimatum it is resisting.
It's beginning to look like the first scene of the third act of the War on Terror will be bombs and missiles over Tehran.
