Sharing common ground

Some strong feelings have emerged in response to the recent story on the protest by parents at Lawrence Elementary School.

I am grateful that in this country we have the right to express our opinions - both popular and otherwise. What I have found disturbing is that, in some cases, writers have negatively stereotyped a whole group. I think it is important to remember the common bonds we all share.

Except for Native Americans, all of our families have, at some point, immigrated to this country. Common ground.

While I have no personal knowledge of the details of the differences at Lawrence, parents and school staff care deeply about the children's education. Common ground.

"Bilingual education" is a term that has been used to describe a variety of adaptations. A main goal of any good bilingual program is that the children have regular lessons to become proficient in English. Common ground.

We all want a place to raise our children where they can be happy, healthy and achieve their potential. Common ground.
