Just a day after 144 cyclists zoomed down Lodi streets for the Amgen Tour of California, event organizers and city officials are hailing the Lodi Stage 2 finish as a success.

Cheers for a brave legion of cancer survivors

As music blared in the background and the crowds lined the streets, 150 people walked down Hutchins Street in Lodi. Some wore blue Amgen Breakaway T-shirts. Others were dressed in pink T-shirts with the words “Team Savannah.” Some wore Lodi High School cheer uniforms. All of them were part of the Breakaway from Cancer half-mile walk.

Some were cycling fanatics, with favorite riders and lists of stats. Others had never been to a cycling race before, choosing a team to support at random.

Bring together a large crowd of enthusiastic people for one important purpose, and you’re bound to find a few eccentrics and goofballs in the bunch. The spectators and hangers-on of the AMGEN are a loud and cheerful group, eager to celebrate cycling and the world-class athletes speeding into town.

Crowd builds in Lodi ahead of Amgen Tour of California race

People dressed for a sunny day swung off bicycles as they reached Hutchins Street on Monday morning. They were joined by others streaming from parking areas and buses, all headed for a pumping dance beat.
