Lodi resident Stacy Lee Knutson sat in the grass of his front yard, handcuffed, with his young, smiling son wiggling in his lap. His daughter played with her pink bouncy ball, weaving in and out of a circle of roughly 10 police officers and detectives from Lodi, Stockton and San Joaquin County. Knutson’s home was just one of 220 places named and visited in a citywide sweep conducted by the Lodi Police Department with the help of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department, San Joaquin County Probation, Stockton Police Department, Lodi Police Department, California State Parole and Delta RATT. The answer to the problem of preventing the closure of afterschool programs at the four Lodi elementary schools (Reese, Vinewood, Larsen, and Lakewood) is simple: Lodi Unified School District should stop charging the $50,000 yearly rent to the city for use of the facilities at these schools.
